Alta Vista is a large inclusive community located on the east side of Ottawa. Made up of a number of smaller neighbourhoods, Alta Vista was named for the relative elevation of the neighbourhood, which sits on a rise above the Rideau River valley. It consists of the following neighbourhoods: Applewood Acres, Billings bridge, Canterbury, Elmvale Acres, Faircrest, Guildwood Estates, Playfair Park, Rideau park, Urbandale, and Urbandale Acres.
Very residential with a strong sense of community, there are several churches, community centres, and multiple elementary and high schools. These include: Alta Vista Public School, Arch Street Public School, Featherston Drive Public School, Hawthorne Public School, Pleasant Park Public School, and Vincent Massey Public School as elementary schools. Canterbury High School and Hillcrest High School are the areas public secondary schools, while three catholic schools round out the list. They are McMaster Catholic, St. Patrick’s Intermediate, and St. Patrick’s High School.
There is a vast amount of park space spread throughout the area, with the Rideau River along the west border providing beautiful views and unique green spaces.
Alta Vista is home to some of Ottawa’s major hospitals. The General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario are located in the northern section, while the Riverside Campus of the Ottawa Hospital is located at Smyth and Riverside Drive.
The OC Transpo Transitway also runs through the neighbourhoods of Alta Vista, with Pleasant Park and Riverside stations providing central services for access to the rest of the city. Billings Bridge and Smyth stations are also nearby, serving as convenient links.
There is also plenty of amenities, including shops and services at Billings Bridge Plaza Shopping Centre, and the Elmvale Shopping Centre in addition to several smaller strip malls and independent shops.
