| Billings Bridge is one of Ottawa's oldest communities, named after Bradish Billings, who settled in the area and established a farm in 1812. The original Billings Bridge was built in 1830. The bridge that exists today was built in 1916, and Bank Street passes over the river by way of this bridge.
The Village of Billings Bridge became part of the city of Ottawa in 1950. Several schools and plenty of park land are spread throughout the neighbourhood, is proximate to three hospitals, and the South East Ottawa Health Centre is located just across from the largest shopping centre, Billings Bridge Plaza, which offers all kinds of shops and services. Originally built in 1954, it did not become enclosed until 1975. It is located immediately south of the Rideau River on the corner of Bank Street and Riverside Drive.
The anchor stores are a Zellers and a Loblaws. It is a medium sized mall by modern standards with 85 stores. A main OC Transpo station is also conveniently located in the plaza complex, with routes 1, 111, 141, 148 and 5 providing service to this neighbourhood.
