Running along Ottawa’s eastern edge, it encompasses several neighbourhoods to accumulate a population of over 100,000. Its size is attributed to its early designation as a city, since being one of the regions first established townships in 1792. It was incorporated as a township in 1850, and became a city in 1981.
In 2001, it was one of the many municipalities that merged to form the new city of Ottawa. Gloucester covers a breadth of smaller neighbourhoods, including: Beacon Heights, Beacon Hill, Blackburn Hamlet, Blossom Park, Carlsbad Springs, Carson Grove, Cedardale, Chapel Hill, Chateau Neuf, Convent Glen, Cyrville, Edwards, Elizabeth Park, Ficko, Gloucester Glen, Hiawatha Park, Honey Gables, Johnston Corners, Kempark, Leitrim, Limebank, Manotick Station, Orleans, Pineview, Piperview, Ramsayville, Riverglen, Riverside South, Rothwell Hights, South Gloucester, Victory Hill and Windsor Park Village, to accrue a substantive amount of impressive amenities.
Extremely well serviced, Gloucester and its descendant neighbourhoods have access to ample schools, including Gloucester High School, which boasts a very diverse student body and extensive array of clubs and organizations.
Since many of these suburbs are family oriented, there are plenty of family facilities, like health care and dental services close at hand. Plenty of shopping is spread through the neighbourhoods, ranging from small mom and pop shops, to big box centres, to the Place d’Oleans shopping centre, one of Ottawa’s largest.
There are excellent recreational facilities in the area. Swimming pools, hockey arenas, golf courses, conservation areas with ski and hiking trails, as well as park and pathways that wind along the Ottawa River.
There is easy access to Hwy 417 for quick trips to the downtown core, as well as O-Train stations, park ‘n Ride, and well serviced bus routes throughout the greater Gloucester community.
